a drop of water - one of the four main risk to physical photos, videos, film reels

What Are The Risks?

In order to preserve your physical photos, it’s necessary to understand the risks that can cause decay and damage. The four main risk factors are:

  • Light: Sunlight is a strong source of UV rays which can fade and deteriorate photos. For framed prints, consider displaying a copy from an archival scan and keeping originals in cool, dark storage.
  • Heat: High temperatures, especially over 75°F, accelerate the decay process. The cooler the better.
  • Humidity: The ideal storage environment has 30-50% relative humidity, and anything above 60% relative humidity is especially risky. When heat and humidity combine, they lead to mold growth, which usually can’t be removed without permanently damaging photos.
  • Catastrophe: When catastrophe such as a fire, flood, tornado, or hurricane strike, there’s not much that can be done. In a typical house fire you only have 2-3 minutes to get out alive. This is why every project starts with gathering and scanning physical photos.

Be sure to factor in the risks as you make decisions about storage and conversion projects.
