digital photo memory cards - digital formats

Where do I start?

Our average photo organizing client has more than 100,000 digital photos and some of our clients have as many as 5-10 million digital photos. When it comes to physical photos, our average family client has 10,000 prints, slides, and negatives.

But there’s a noticeable difference in how different generations shoot and manage their digital photos. Our older clients usually have thousands of digital photos, our middle-aged clients have tens of thousands of photos, and many of our younger clients shoot and keep tens of thousands of photos every year. These massive collections have been the proving ground of the organizing workflow I’ve developed and refined over the last 25 years and teach in my new book, Declutter Your Photo Life.

Everybody I know feels overwhelmed by their photos and they ask “Where do I start?”

Every photo organizing project, without exception, starts with gathering. This is true of digital projects that might involve hundreds of thousands or even millions of digital photos from computers, hard drives, discs, clouds, and memory cards. We also start every physical photo project with gathering, even if it’s as simple as gathering an envelope or shoebox of photos to scan.

If you’re ready to get your photos under control, start by gathering everything in one place because it helps define the scope of the project and identify the priorities for where to focus next.
