Compact Cassette

Introduced by Phillips in 1963, the popular audio cassette format replaced reel to reel tape, vinyl records, and 8-track cassettes for most consumer audio recordings. Compact cassettes can be pre-recorded with commercial music or blank for recording, and they were often used for mix-tapes and voice recordings. Compact discs were released in 1982 and outsold compact cassettes by the early 1990s.
