Common Mistake: Backing up to CD or DVD
In the early 2000s it was popular to backup photo memories on optical discs including CDs and DVDs. It might seem like that was just yesterday, but it’s been a quarter century and technology has changed.
Over the last 25 years we’ve learned that CDs and DVDs are not as reliable as we once thought. In fact, CDs and DVDs are one of the least reliable backup formats for long-term storage and it’s urgent that you migrate those backups to modern and reliable storage such as solid-state hard drives (aka SSDs).

Some of the biggest risks to optical media include:
- Physical cracks
- Scratches, especially on the top
- Adhesive labels
- Decay of the organic dyes used in the manufacturing process
