Orb

In 1997, a new startup named Castlewood Systems released a removable disk format called the Orb with an impressive capacity of 2.2GB. Castlewood was founded by industry veterans from SyQuest and Seagate, and they faced lawsuits from multiple competitors before they even announced their first product.

Four years later Castlewood released a 5.7GB version of the Orb drive which was backward compatible with the earlier 2.2GB. Faced with stiff competition and mounting legal troubles, the Orb was a commercial failure and Castlewood closed in 2004.
