Vacation Photo Tips

When you start packing for vacation, it’s also time to get your camera ready to capture important memories. Here are five tips that will give you a better photo taking experience and make it easier to organize your photos when you come home…

1. Charge Your Batteries

If it’s been a while since you’ve travelled and used your “good” camera, then start your vacation prep by charging the battery for your camera. After a while, batteries don’t hold as much of a charge, so you might also consider purchasing a spare battery if you don’t already have one and make sure you pack your battery charger.

2. Download Old Photos

It’s important to start your vacation “photo fresh” so you’ll want to copy all existing photos from your memory cards. Use the card reader slot on your computer or a card reader like this one and copy any old photos to your computer. This helps you avoid downloading the same photos multiple times.

3. Format Memory Cards

Before you depart, format all your memory cards so you have maximum available storage capacity. You should always format your memory cards in your camera instead of just deleting old photos. This helps ensure the card works reliably and doesn’t corrupt your photos.

4. Set the Date and Time

If your camera hasn’t been used in a while, then the date and time setting on your camera might be wrong. It’s important to set the date and time on your camera before any important trip or event to ensure the capture details are correct and your photos are easy to organize. If you’re traveling across time zones, make sure to adjust the time on your camera to match the local time zone.

5. Capture Clues

When you’re on vacation enjoying new experiences and exploring new places, you tell yourself you’ll never forget these moments. But after a while all those hiking trail and waterfall photos start to look the same. Take photos of signs, menus, and programs to help you remember context and clues. You don’t have to keep these photos, but they can provide important reminders for organizing later.
