Mini CD-R

Sony got an early lead on the digital camera market in the late 1990s, but the floppy disk was proving to be their achilles heel because it was a slow and low capacity storage format. In 2000, Sony released the CD Mavica MVC-CD1000, the first digital camera to store photos on recordable optical media. These mini CD-R discs could only be read in a tray-loading CD drive or with a special adapter ring. They also had to be “finalized” before you could read the data on a computer and that process could use up almost ten percent of the available space. This format is susceptible to scratches and organic degradation which can render the disc unreadable.
