Memory Stick

Introduced in 1998 by Sony, the Memory Stick format captured 25% market share by 2001 against competitors such as CompactFlash and SmartMedia. However, they were all soon eclipsed by the popular SD format. The Memory Stick format actually includes several different standards, three different form factors, and many different capacities, but because of their limited adoption they are relatively rare. The most common form factor is the original Memory Stick which looks like a stick of purple chewing gum. Almost all Memory Sticks were manufactured by Sony, but a limited number were manufactured by third-party producers such as SanDisk and Lexar.
