What kind of hard drive should I use for my photos?

Our average client has over 100,000 digital photos, so choosing a hard drive is an important decision to keep your memories safe and accessible. Key factors include capacity, speed, reliability, and price.

There are two major types of hard drives in the market for you to consider:

  • Hard Disk Drive (HDD): A conventional hard disk drive has spinning platters, offers large capacity, and is the most affordable option. If you want the largest capacity or lowest price-per-capacity, an HDD is your best option.
  • Solid State Drive (SSD): Newer SSD drives have no moving parts which makes them more reliable, are 10x faster than an HDD, but cost about twice as much. If you want the fastest and most reliable drive and have a larger budget, then an SSD is your best option.

In the early days of our business, we delivered large client projects on conventional spinning HDDs, but in recent years the price of SSDs has dropped significantly. Because SSDs are faster, more reliable, and have no moving parts to fail, we deliver large client projects on SSDs.
