Iomega released the Zip disk in 1994 as a convenient way to backup and transfer up to 100MB of computer files, which was considered a lot of data at the time. Zip disks were never used as a media storage format in digital cameras, but they were very popular in the graphic design industry.

In the following years, Iomega introduced 250MB and 750MB capacities which offered backward compatibility with previous versions. In 1998 Iomega was served with a class action suit for their infamous “Click of Death” reliability issues and by the early 2000s the format faced stiff competition from recordable CDs and USB flash drives. Sales declined steeply through 2003 and the format is remembered for both its popularity and lack of reliability.
