SyQuest 105/270

SyQuest released their first 3.5″ removable disk in the spring of 1993 with a 105MB capacity, and followed quickly with a 270MB edition later the same year. Unfortunately, the 105 and 270 SyQuest weren’t backward compatible with previous 5.25″ formats or other 3.5″ formats from the same era, including the SyQuest EZ135 or the SyQuest EZFlyer 230. At least the 270 drives were backward compatible with 105 disks.

Popularity of their earlier 5.25″ products meant Syquest dominated the industry, and in an ironic twist their previous success limited their market expansion and sales of new products. These formats faded from the market when SyQuest filed for bankruptcy and went out of business in 1998.
