Common Mistake: Displaying Damaged Photos
Old photos can suffer many kinds of damage, even with the protection of a picture frame. Some of the most common issues we see include fading, discoloration, tears, mold, and scratches from broken glass.
The good news is that all this damage can usually be fixed with professional restoration. This process includes scanning the damaged print, restoring the digital image with Adobe Photoshop, and reprinting the restored image.
However, some folks insist on continuing to display the original, damaged photo. I understand that our memories are often attached to the image of a memory, and not always the original experience. However, displaying the original print means it will only become more faded, discolored, and moldy over time.
Instead, we suggest storing the original print in archival storage in a cool, dark, and dry location. Then you can use a reprint of the restored image for display. It might not be the original, but it will look better and can always be replaced with a new reprint from the restored digital file.
