Magneto Optical (MO)

Magneto-optical discs were introduced in 1985 and used a combination of magnetic and optical technologies to record large quantities of data on a disc that looked like a CD in a permanent case. The first versions were WORM drives (write on, read many), but later systems introduced full rewrite capabilities. Magneto-optical drives are generally backward compatible, meaning a 640 MB drive should be able to read and write discs with 230 MB and 128 MB capacity.
