Photo Backup Best Practices
Family photos are precious, but most people have a haphazard photo backup plan, or none at all. Unfortunately, many people contact us only after something catastrophic happens. Some of the most common issues we see include technical failures, missing backups, and human error.
The good news is that a simple plan and a little discipline is all it takes to keep your memories safe. We use the 3-2-1 backup plan and recommend it for all our clients:
– 3 –
If you only have your photos stored in one place and that device dies or is stolen, you’ll lose everything. Keeping two copies decreases your risk, and keeping three copies of all your photos is even better.
– 2 –
Two copies of the same photos on the same computer doesn’t count as a backup! You need to store your photos on two different media, such as an internal hard drive and an external hard drive.

In addition to an onsite backup, you should also keep one copy of your photos offsite for complete disaster recovery. Even if you lose your home and all your belongings, you won’t lose your family photos.
