CFExpress

In recent years QXD, CFast, and CFexpress have competed in the latest digital format war, and at this point it looks like CFExpress has emerged as the winner. CFExpress offers blistering transfer speeds and is well-suited for 4k digital video and high-end digital cameras. CFExpress cards are usually backwards-compatible with QXD cards, but they’re not backwards-compatible with cameras or card readers that support CompactFlash despite the similar names. At this point there are two physical sizes available called Type A (smaller) and Type B (larger). There’s also a theoretical third Type C format which is the largest form factor, but it’s not currently used in any devices.

  • Year: 2017
  • Dimensions: CFexpress Type A is the smallest, measuring 20mm × 28mm × 2.8mm. The larger Type B cards measure 29.6mm × 38.5mm × 3.8mm. The yet-to-be-released Type C cards should measure 54mm × 74mm × 4.8mm.
