Estimating Photo Slides

One of the most common questions we get is about the cost of photo scanning projects. We could spend many hours counting photos to get an exact number, but instead we use reliable estimating strategies so we can spend our time scanning.

Clients bring us many formats including prints, negatives, albums, and slides. Photo slides are one of our favorite formats because they usually hold up very well over time and render vibrant, high-quality scans. When clients bring them to us, they are usually stored in one of three ways:

  1. Round carousels like these classic Kodak models, which hold either 80 or 140 slides each. Carousels aren’t always full, but it’s an easy way to estimate a project.

2. Slide magazines that typically store 30, 36, or 50 slides per container. Again, some magazines might not be completely full but it’s a simple estimating tool.

slide magazines usually hold 30-50 slides each

3. Loose slides in boxes or envelopes are about 20 slides per stacked inch.
